This is a a wonderful spot to absorb tradtional Mexican beach culture with the beach a short walk away. This is a globe class surfing beach with grand waves and sometimes dangerous conditions, so be prepared. Unless you know Puerto Escondido, ask a local cabbie to take you to Salvador St. near The Point. The hostal is exactly where they say it is. Not hard. There is certainly a surf competition today! Venado has a double meaning, playing hooky or stag deer. You choose.

So glad I chose this place! Had a amazing room with patio and nice rooftop with outstanding breeze overlooking the ocean. Denise hooked me up with a surf teacher in town who came and picked me up the two days I was there and took me to where the waves were - very happy with it. Neat individuals staying there as well. I liked the location near La Punta.

8 venado is an excellent hostel! the spot is clean and extremely comfortable, along with the household that runs the spot is so nice, welcoming and helpfull, they really made our staying there an excellent experience!

Our room was stunning and colourful and extremely clean, with a little balcony. The location was extremely near to the beach, 2 mins walk. But about a half hour walk from the main bit of Zicatela. That suited us though, as the beach by the hostel was pretty much deserted so we had it all to ourselves.

We stayed at hostel 8 Venado for about 4 days. The stay was amazing! Denise is so lovely and instantly friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere was really laid back and comfortable with everything you could need. The location is great, so close to the beach and La Punta is a really relax component of town with fantastic places to eat (try the Monchistation) and great surf. It is a little out of the principal centre but a 5 mins walk takes you to the principal highway exactly where you can catch a 5 Peso Collectivo into Zicatela and down-town Puerto Escondido. And a cab is about 25-30 pesos. We will be back! :)

We had originally booked 3 nights at Hostal 8, but soon after two days of lovely weather, and a fantastic private room with ensuite, we decided to extend our stay and ended up staying for 7 nights. If you are a surfer, it is an ideal location to stay, It is located between the La Punta and Zicatela beaches. If you, like us, want somewhere with your personal space (and also fantastic public area) to relax, it is also perfect. Denise was very helpful and friendly, you can tell that there has been a lot of enjoy fed into the hostel. We loved our stay, it is located on a silent street and is only two blocks from four or five fantastic cafes and eateries that provided us with consistently fantastic food, with a wide choice of organic and vegetarian options. Not to mention the cheapest beers we&'ve found in Mexico right next to the hostel inside the corner store. We found it really difficult to leave, and would go back to Hostal 8 Venado without hesitation, definitely suggest to anyone who wants a restful beachside stay!

Very low priced and only 50 metres from the beach. Owner is v helpful and nice and its only been open 2 months and she says more improvements are planned.
