For NYC- this hostel is ridiculously cheap. The weekend rate is a bit much more though. Really social hostel. Good spot to go in case you travel alone as the low rates encourage ppl from all walks of life to stay. The area is &"edgy&" but as a young female backpacker (and if I may say, reasonably hot) travelling alone- didn&'t have the slightest issue walking alone in the hood at night. I even did a White Castle run in the early hours of the morning without a hint of bother. The nearby corner store is also really cheap- a bagel and philly cheese will sting you $1 and a can of Four Loko is $3. Definately the only choice for the backpacker on a shoestring.
